Belgian Defense Ministry hit by cyberattack exploiting Log4j flaw
The Belgian defense ministry announced that it was hit by a cyberattack where the threat actors have exploited the Log4Shell vulnerability.
The attack was uncovered on Thursday and now the government disclosed it. According to local media, the security breach blocked the ministry’s activities for several days.
A Ministry spokesperson told local media that the hackers exploited a vulnerability in software called Log4j, which was discovered earlier in December.
The Belgian defense ministry is yet to provide information regarding the attack.
The ministry’s teams have been working hard in past days to secure its networks. The spokesperson stated that in order to prevent similar incidents in the future, the government will continue to invest in cybersecurity.
Multiple reports from companies like Google and Microsoft have indicated that government hacking groups around the world are leveraging the Log4j vulnerability in attacks.
Multiple nation-state actors, including APT groups linked to China, Iran, North Korea and Turkey, started exploiting the flaw in their operations.
Governments around the world have urged agencies and organizations to patch their systems or find mitigations to avoid attacks.
A spokesperson at Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium said that they have sent out warnings to Belgian companies about the Apache Log4j software issue, writing that any organization that had not already taken action should expect major problems in the coming days and weeks.
